It has come to my attention that apparently NO English has been taught to my former students, or the new ones, since October. This suggests a somewhat cavalier attitude towards the students, and a serious degree of administrative and financial incompetence, not befitting a proper department of modern languages at a proper university. If anyone can shed light on this story, and let me know, I would appreciate it. I hope that you are not too frightened to do so. If people do not speak their minds to improve matters, democracy can be strangled by the powerpaths and cabalists. Is the DFLTI already going through a sort of extended rigor mortis (nekriki akampsia)?
TO ALL MY FORMER STUDENTS: I DO HOPE THAT YOU ARE BEING TAUGHT PROPERLY, AND HAVE SOMEONE WHO KNOWS BRITAIN AS A NATIVE, AND CAN EXPLAIN THE NUANCES OF THE WORD 'DOWNRIGHT', 'FORTHRIGHT' AND 'RIGHT'; WHO CAN TALK IN DIFFERENT BRITISH REGIONAL ACCENTS; WHO HAS WRITTEN BOOKS ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ON BRITAIN; WHO ADORES ENGLISH LITERATURE; WHO CAN COMPARE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TO GERMAN, FRENCH, ITALIAN AND DUTCH; WHO LIVED IN BRITAIN FOR FORTY YEARS; WHO RETURNS THERE REGULARLY; AND WHO UNDERSTANDS HIS PEOPLE AND ALL THE SUBTLETIES.
